Engaging Students in State Test Preparation
At my school our state testing (MAP) is coming up in a week or so and this year I decided to do something different to prepare my kids for their test! In years past, I've typically created review packet on review packet in order to drill concepts in hopes my students would retain enough to be successful on the test. This year, I took a different approach and decided to create daily activities to help review concepts we learned from earlier in the year.
I first decided to break up our curriculum into smaller parts that more or less made sense chronologically for a review. I started with Operations with Decimals and thank you to @miss5th, I decided to create a Spin & Solve activity for adding and multiplying decimals. Students would use a paperclip and the point of their pencil to create a spinner. They would spin each wheel once and record their spins and their answers on a separate sheet provided to them. I've learned that taking ordinary worksheets to a new level also takes student engagement to a new level.
After we reviewed operations with decimals, we moved on to fractions, decimals, and percents. Despite spending what felt like year on this topic in the beginning of the school year, it was obvious students really needed the review.
The week ended with Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. It was refreshing to hear my students remember the "Keep, Change, Flip" rule (thanks Flocabulary!). In order to review these concepts, I put together and activity using a standard deck of playing cards. Students would draw 4 cards to create the two fractions and flip a coin to determine if they were multiplying or dividing them. Students then recorded their answers on an answer form I created.
